The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle June 4, 2012 Ann Lee 8D â€Å"The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle† by Avi is about a thirteen-year-old girl, Charlotte Doyle, traveling from England to America, where her family was living. After the ship had left, she realized that she was the only female passenger on the ship, which was called Seahawk. Charlotte was an upper class and educated girl, unlike many of the sailors on the ship. Despite the fact that one of the sailors warned Charlotte about Captain Jaggery’s true side, Charlotte didn’t believe him and became friends with Captain Jaggery, who seemed like a gentleman to her.However, she realized that the captain was using her to get information and he was cruel to the sailors. Charlotte decided to join the rebels. The rebels wanted to kill the captain, who was cruel and mean to them, and Captain Jaggery was trying to prevent the sailors from rebelling against him. Clearly, there was a conflict between the reb els and Captain Jaggery. The climax of the story was when Captain Jaggery died by falling off the ship, and the conflict was also resolved, since the war between the rebels and Captain Jaggery was over. The main theme of this novel is the change of identity.Before her journey, she was just a rich, upper class girl, who was educated. But when she was on the ship with other sailors, she had to be one of them. She wore dirty clothes that she wasn’t allowed to wear at home and didn’t care about her manners and behaviors. Her parents always told her to behave like a lady, but her identity has changed when she was on the ship; she was acting like a different person. Clearly, change of identity took place in this novel. I like how this book was written in the perspective of a teenage girl, who is about my age. I could understand the character better, and read the book from her perspective.

Bachelor of Science nurses (BSN) vs Associate degree nurses (ADN) Essay

More and more workplaces are requiring their employees to have a baccalaureate degree. Is there really a difference in the level of care a patient will receive from nurse with an associate’s degree of Nursing versus a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing? According to many studies and research they say there is a difference between the two. â€Å"In the baccalaureate nursing practice incorporates the roles of assessing, critical thinking, communicating, providing care, teaching, and leading. The caring professional approach includes the values of autonomy, altruism, human dignity integrity, and social justice with unconditional regard for all people (Grand Canyon Philosophy, 2011).† â€Å"Currently, data suggests that approximately 50% of the nursing staff on a given unit are Bachelor of Science nurses (BSNs). The other 50% of the staff may be composed of associate degree nurses (ADNs) with less academic training with more or less professional experience in caring for complex or critical patients in today’s environment (Sexton, 2008).† BSNs are a better-rounded individual. BSN programs include more science based classes and liberal arts, whereas the ADN programs have a basic science background and more focused on the skills and clinical portion of nursing. Many nurse leaders recommend BSN training for entry into practice because studies indicate better patient outcomes, better nurse satisfaction, and greater longevity in the workplace for BSNs as compared with their colleagues with less academic training (differentiating workplace). There have been studies completed that compare the mortality rate of patients that were taken care of by nurses with their ADN versus BSN. According to the fact sheet Creating a More Highly Qualified Nursing Workforce they found that â€Å"a 10-point increase in the percentage of nurses holding a BSN within a hospital was associated with an average reduction of 2.12 deaths for every 1,000 patients and for a subset of patients with complications, an average reduction of 7.47 deaths per 1,000 patients (Creating a More Highly Qualified Workforce, 2103).† All nurses sit for the same N-CLEX-RN licensing examination. â€Å"New nurses pass the licensing exam at the same rate does not mean all nurses are prepared equally for practice (Creating a More Highly Qualified Workforce,  2103).† The N-CLEX exam just tests for the minimum knowledge one needs to become a registered nurse. ADNs and BSNs have the same skill level but BSNs I believe have better critical thinking skills, which in turn cause them to be better at problem solving in a patient care situation. At my current job I was trying to think of some situations where it would be better to have my BSN and where it would improve patient care. I work for an ophthalmologist at an eye surgery center. Our patient population can range from kids to the elderly. We take care of the elderly more so than any other age range. We do surgery once a week, mostly cataract surgery. Other procedures are performed but not as frequently as the cataracts. I work as a pre-op nurse mostly but occasionally will do post-op or work in the operating room. On the days I’m not working in surgery I work in creating quality improvement studies, benchmarking, infection control, and do things with risk management. I have been doing this job for two and half years now. Prior to this job I was a floor nurse that worked in rehab with patients that had just got out of the hospital that weren’t quite ready to go home. My friend told me that she knew a job opening that she thought would be good for me, which is the job I have now. This job was something I had never done or knew nothing about. It was a job that I said I would never want to do. I always wanted to be a nurse because of the patient care aspect and helping patients when they were at their worst helping them to get better. If I had my BSN this would make me better at my job. I have to put together quality improvement studies. I was never been taught anything about quality improvement while in school for my ADN. I have had to learn as I go. Another thing I have to do is write up incident reports. From those incident reports I have to look for trends. If there are trends I have to write up a plan or start a study to keep other patients from experiencing the same situations that put them at risk, which promotes better patient care. If I had my BSN I would have learned about all this and would be able to better care for the patients. Right now I don’t understand why I have to do all that I do and how it makes me take better care of the patients. Having my BSN would allow me to understand this and let me know why we do this. There are many advantages in having a BSN versus an ADN. It makes sense why most workplaces are requiring a bachelor’s degree now a days. When an Early Years practitioner is planning activities they should take in to consideration the following Pregnancy or birth difficulties, Disability, Illness, Environment and Stress, because these factors can make a big difference how an individual child learns and develops. Early Years Statutory Framework (EYSF) State thatâ€Å"Practitioners must consider the individual needs, interests, and stage development of each child in their care, and must use this information to plan a challenging and enjoyable experience for each child in all of the areas of learning and development†. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) State thatâ€Å"Practitioners should help develop their key child’s personalities, abilities and talents to the fullest potential, and be given the opportunity to grow up in an environment of happiness, love and understanding†. If practitioners within the nursery setting follow the above guidelines the child’s key worker will have excellent knowledge of their key children within their care. It is their responsibility to offer each key child an individual way to grow and develop at a steady pace. It is advised by (EYSF) that an Early Years practitioner follow this typical cycle of (planning, observation and assessment) for each â€Å"unique child†. A good time to observe is during free play sessions. By being a good listener and observer practitioners can get a better understanding and gain good knowledge of the child’s preferred interests which they find stimulating and what they can/can’t do well independently! An example of this a child loves independently playing with cars and their key worker has observed they need to develop numeracy and creative skills – by providing a fun activity with several types of cars you should immediately capture their curiosity you could begin the activity by counting the cars together, then if the child is still focused and amused you could use the tyres of the cars to make different marks with coloured paints, this in turn will help develop their numeracy knowledge and creativity! By using the typical triangle cycle to plan and access you avoid choosing an activity which is either non-engaging or uninteresting for the child and which may be possibly too easy for the child to gain any suitable knowledge or stimulating enough for their individual learning outcome. Alternatively if a child finds the activity too hard it could provide a negative impact on them and in turn it could affect their self-esteem hindering their own learning journey in the future. If the key worker provides sufficient praise during the planned activity the key child will be supported and this attitude will help their self-esteem and they will continue to progress well. The advantage of using this type of planning cycle for your key child’s learning journey are it can be tracked appropriately and effectively for each individual child within your care and will therefore boost their own development, physical and social growth. Explain how the practitioner can promote children’s physical and emotional well-being within an early years setting Parents have to have immense confidence and trust by leaving their child in the care of practitioners within an Early Years setting therefore it is absolute paramount that their precious child is valued, supported, safe, loved and well cared for during those hours that the parents cannot be around. Every Child Matters: (ECM) is a UK government initiative for England and Wales it states that â€Å"There are five important factors to improve children’s lives as a whole 1. Being healthy, 2. Staying safe; 3. Enjoy achieving; 4. Making a positive contribution; 5. Economic well being†. These five factors may not all apply to Early Years children but by securing and helping them develop the first three skills as the child grows in to an older child factors four and five should be a natural progression/development as long as they continue to be nurtured, supported and valued individuals within society. If Early Years practitioners adhere especially to these first three factors these will provide them with an excellent base and grounding, practitioners can promote a child’s physical and emotional well-being within an Early Years setting in several different ways Safeguarding infants by keeping children safe and secure in a positive environment helps them to achieve the best they can achieve because they will feel secure and well supported Securing strong early relationships having a strong bond with key worker/child is very important for a good quality learning experience Teach children to become aware and to empathise with other people, this gives them a sense of belonging and shows them how to be a helpful and kind individual Being a positive role model by being a healthy key worker, keeping safe and helping them to enjoy achieving with like minded people Focus on positive attitudes and behaviour this type of focus helps the child to realise that good behaviour is rewarding which will give them a sense of achievement Allowing them to have a choice helping them to discover self worth and adapt to their own actions this promotes self-esteem and will build their confidence and will help them to feel empowered as an independent, confident learner Structured daily routine helps the child to feel safe, secure and well cared for which promotes positive behaviour A good practitioner should be able to promote a child’s physical and emotional well being by teaching and being an excellent role model. Odour of Chrysanthemums as a Classic    The claim that "Odour of Chrysanthemums" is a well-crafted story is hardly brave or risky, for many would agree. For instance, the man who in a sense discovered Lawrence, English Review editor F. M. Ford, said this about "Odour of Chrysanthemums": The very title makes an impact on the mind. You get at once the knowledge that this is not, whatever else it may turn out, either a frivolous or even a gay springtime story. Chrysanthemums are not only flowers of the autumn: they are the autumn itself. . . This man knows what he wants. He sees the scene of his story exactly. He has an authoritative mind. (Ford 257) As a fiction editor, he is quite receptive to Lawrence's descriptive gifts. He is impressed with Lawrence's sense of purpose. But readers needn't assess the short story by Ford's methods alone. Modern readers have a very different perspective than Lawrence's contemporaries, ensuring that many different analyses of "Odour of Chrysanthemums" are possible. However, the plot itself is very simple. In the 1914 version, Elizabeth Bates spends most of the story waiting for her husband to return from the mine, fretting that he is once again dallying at a favorite pub. His coworkers drag him home, but he is not in a drunken stupor. He is dead, suffocated in an accident at the mine. Initially it seems that the moment when Elizabeth learns that her husband is dead is the story's climax. However, this is not the story's most riveting moment, for Lawrence's foreshadowing has already given this ending away. Elizabeth often unknowingly hints at the coming death, saying, "They'll bring him when he does come--like a log" (Lawrence 290). The real surprise comes after the reader discove... ...e sense alone. This idea reflects people's deepest fears, or perhaps evokes new ones. "Odour of Chrysanthemums" is not successful and shocking because of particularly beautiful writing, realistic characters or even a surprise ending.
